Israel Must Not Be the Theme Country of the Kolkata International Book Fair 2027
We recently came across a news report in the media suggesting that Israel is being considered as a proposed theme country for the International Kolkata Book Fair scheduled to be held next year. We are unaware of the veracity of this report. However, we wish to express our deep concern that, if the report is true, such a decision would run counter to the cultural ethos and heritage of the Kolkata Book Fair.
The State of Israel has faced widespread condemnation across the world for its Zionist policies. With only a handful of exceptions, countries around the world do not support Israel's warmongering and aggressive policies.
The Palestinian question is not a recent one, and various ideological groups hold differing views on the matter. However, only a very small section of people supports the manner in which Israel has pursued its aggression, both throughout history and in recent times.
In this context, choosing Israel as the theme country for a book fair in our city and state—an event renowned internationally as the Kolkata International Book Fair—would send a deeply inappropriate message to the international community. Such a decision would also be inconsistent with India's foreign policy.
As residents of Kolkata and West Bengal, we vehemently oppose any such decision, should it have indeed been taken.
Our Demand Is Clear
Israel must not, under any circumstances, be selected as the theme country of the Kolkata International Book Fair.

আমরা মিডিয়া মারফত একটি খবর কিছুদিন আগে জানতে পেরেছি,সামনের বছর কলকাতায় যে আন্তর্জাতিক বইমেলা অনুষ্ঠিত হতে চলেছে,তার থিম কান্ট্রির প্রস্তাব হিসাবে ইজরায়েলের নাম উঠে আসছে।এ খবরের সত্যতা আমরা জানি না।কিন্তু আমরা গভীর উদ্বেগের সাথে জানাতে চাই এই খবর যদি সত্যি হয় তা কলকাতা বইমেলার সংস্কৃতি এবং ঐতিহ্যের পরিপন্থী হবে।ইজরায়েল রাষ্ট্র তার জায়নবাদী নীতির কারণে সারা বিশ্বে নিন্দিত।হাতে গোনা কয়েকটি রাষ্ট্র বাদে ইজরায়েলের যুদ্ধবাজ এবং আগ্রাসী নীতিকে কেউ সমর্থন করে না।প্যালেস্টাইনের সমস্যা আজকের নয়।তা নিয়ে অনেক মতগোষ্ঠীর নানা মতামত আছে।কিন্তু যেভাবে ইজরায়েল তার আগ্রাসনকে সূদুর ও সাম্প্রতিক ইতিহাসে নামিয়ে এনেছে, খুব ক্ষুদ্র অংশই তার সমর্থক।এমতাবস্থায় আমাদের শহর তথা আমাদের রাজ্যে একটি বইমেলায়(যা আন্তর্জাতিক বইমেলা নামে খ্যাত)থিম কান্ট্রি হিসাবে ইজরায়েলকে বেছে নিলে তা আন্তর্জাতিক ক্ষেত্রেও ভুল বার্তা যাবে।এমনকি ভারতবর্ষের যে বৈদেশিক নীতি,তার সঙ্গেও তা সঙ্গতিপূর্ণ হবে না।আমরা কলকাতা তথা পশ্চিমবঙ্গে মানুষ হিসাবে এধরণের সিদ্ধান্তের(যদি হয়ে থাকে) তীব্র বিরোধিতা করছি।
আমাদের দাবী স্পষ্ট
ইজরায়েলকে কোনভাবেই কলকাতা আন্তর্জাতিক বইমেলার থিম কান্ট্রি করা যাবে না।
