We, the undersigned, object to the following:

1. The lease transfer of 14-16 Ballow Road, Dunwich (the Barracks) from Sibelco to the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS);

2. Any current or future Change of Use application made by the RQYS for the Barracks;

3. Installation of any additional moorings in Deanbilla Bay;

4. Renewal of RQYS leases on existing moorings.

The reasons for our objections are detailed below:

Lease transfer

This was not done with any consultation of the North Stradbroke Island Community or Aboriginal people;

We do not want RQYS at the Barracks, in Deanbilla Bay or on North Stradbroke Island at all; and

We have numerous ideas to establish a Service/s in the Barracks that benefits the community and provides local employment – and we want an opportunity to do this.

Change of Use application

We do not want RQYS proposed sailing school and yacht club on our island (as will be applied for under the RQYS change of lease application)

Additional Moorings

We are concerned of the impact of the moorings, including the float ropes attached to the moorings/ and the drilling of the moorings into the seabed will have on the marine life and their habitat (including the abundant sea grass located in Deanbilla Bay);

It is vital that this area is left clear for the safest possible use by all general public boating recreational users to use who use this area regularly;

We are also concerned of the environmental impacts of sewage dumping from permanently moored boats will have on the sea life and seagrass.

We demand that the Queensland Government and its departments, including Marine Safety Queensland and local ministers to:

1. Reject any further lease transfers from Sibelco to RQYS or any lease renewals of the Barracks by RQYS;

2. Reject any change of use application made by RQYS for the barracks (and Adam’s Beach that runs adjacent to the barracks);

3. Reject any additional moorings to be installed by any Department or organisation in Deanbilla Bay;

4. Reject any RQYS lease renewals on existing moorings; and

5. Support be given to the local community who are committed to working together to determine what we would like to occur with the Barracks in a way will provide a service/s and employment for the local community.
