Petition updateReintegrate Baker Schools into the East Baton Rouge Parish School SystemURGENT UPDATE: Baker School District Merger with Helix Community Schools - Action Needed NOW!
A TLA, United States
1 Apr 2025

Dear Supporters,

We have a critical update regarding the proposed merger of Baker School District with Helix Community Schools. The situation is escalating rapidly, and we need your immediate attention and action.

As many of you know, the Baker School District is facing a potential transition to a Type 3 charter system through a merger with Helix Community Schools. This move poses significant risks to our community and the quality of education our children receive.

What is a Type 3 Charter and Why is it Problematic?

Type 3 charters, unlike traditional public schools, operate with greater autonomy and less local oversight. This can lead to:

  • Reduced Local Control: The Baker community will lose significant control over curriculum, school policies, and resource allocation. Decisions will be made by Helix's governing board, potentially without adequate community input.

  • Potential for Profit-Driven Motives: Charter schools, particularly those managed by larger organizations, can prioritize financial interests over educational quality. This may lead to cuts in essential programs and services.

  • Increased Segregation and Inequality: Charter systems can lead to increased segregation based on socioeconomic status, academic performance, or other factors, creating an unequal educational environment.

  • Lack of Transparency and Accountability: Oversight of charter schools can be less stringent than traditional public schools, making it difficult to ensure accountability and transparency in their operations.

  • Loss of Teacher Unions and Protections: Charter schools often operate outside of traditional union agreements, which can negatively impact teacher job security, benefits, and working conditions. This can cause high teacher turnover and affect the quality of education.

  • Possible Negative Impact on Special Education: Charter schools have been known to not fully serve all students, and students with special needs can be under served.
    Current Situation:

The process is moving quickly, and decisions are being made with limited public input.
There are concerns about the transparency of the negotiations between the Baker School District and Helix Community Schools.

The community's voices are being marginalized in this crucial decision-making process.

What We Need You to Do:

  1. Spread the Word: Share this update with your friends, family, and neighbors. Educate them about the risks of Type 3 charters and the potential impact on our community.

  2. Contact Local Officials: Reach out to the Baker School District board members, city council members, and state representatives. Express your concerns and demand transparency and community involvement.

Thank you for your continued support.
