NOW is the time to stand up. To win, we need people to sign, or to put in a few minutes to spread the petition with their friends. Can you help me out by sharing with your friends? Petition Link
Today our Cleveland Cluster middle school received a graffiti threat of a possible shooting. Last week there was chaos at a PIL basketball game (Roosevelt vs. Cleveland) when shots rang out in the parking lot. Tonight I spoke directly with Superintendent Guerrero at a Cleveland band concert and he's heard our call for change.
Make no mistake, School Resource Officers forge positive community relationships whether teaching safety in the classroom, lunchtime conversation, attending extracurricular activities, or positive interactions through bonding experiences (not a pipeline to prison) that marginalized communities may not otherwise have access to. Through positive relationships with students and collaboration with educators and mental health professionals, SROs can proactively address school safety issues and divert at-risk students from the juvenile justice system while providing all students with the support they need to succeed in school and in life.
SROs are mentors and a success in many communities. Portland must not become complicit to this rampant violence. Now is the time to work together, as a community, to bring back SROs and common sense solutions to bridge the gaps in our communities.
I urge you to gather signatures until we reach 500 or 1,000. If we stand together we cannot be ignored! Thank you for your support bringing safety to our communities. #ReinstateSROs #PortlandPublicSchools #PPSSafety
