The Issue

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is an insidious epidemic that continues to ravage our communities in South Africa. The frequency and brutality of these crimes leave deep scars not just on the victims and their families, but on our society as a whole. I know firsthand the devastation GBV can bring, having lost a loved one to this violence. It is in their memory, and for countless others, that I urge action.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of GBV in the world, with the South African Police Service reporting over 146,000 crimes against women in a single year. Despite being a beacon of human rights, our current legal system seems powerless to deter these heinous acts. Perpetrators operate with impunity, completely disregarding the laws that are meant to protect us.

Reinstating the death penalty for GBV offenders is not about advocating for more death, but about emphasizing the sanctity of life. It sends a stern message that violence against women and children will not be tolerated under any circumstances. While controversial, there is evidence that capital punishment could serve as a deterrent. According to a study by the National Research Council, some forms of violent crime did see an initial decrease when the death penalty was enforced.

However, this action needs to be part of a broader strategy combatting GBV, including educational programs, support services for survivors, and legal reforms that ensure swift and fair trials. It must ensure that only the truly guilty face this ultimate punishment. This is not a departure from our values, but a strengthening of them to protect our most vulnerable.

I call on you to support this petition to bring the death penalty back for GBV offenders in South Africa. We must act decisively and collectively to protect the rights and lives of women and change the trajectory of our nation. Please sign this petition and stand with us in the fight against Gender-Based Violence.
