Reinstate and Fund a Permanent Safe Consumption Site in Windsor

Reinstate and Fund a Permanent Safe Consumption Site in Windsor

The Issue

I have seen the devastating impacts of substance misuse firsthand. Having lost friends to overdose, used alone, and lived on the streets, I know the life-saving potential of a Safe Consumption Site. As a person who has overcome these hardships and engaged in outreach and harm reduction, I am confronted daily by the stakes: life or death; dignity or neglect.

A Safe Consumption Site is more than just a place to use—it connects people keen to change their lives with the help they so desperately need. Unfortunately, Windsor currently lacks such a facility.

We must act for the people who, like I once was, are on the edge and seeking support to turn their lives around. This isn’t just about stopping public drug use—it’s about providing dignity, safety, and keeping people alive.

We call upon the City of Windsor, the Province of Ontario, and the local Health Unit to reinstate and fund a permanent Safe Consumption Site in Windsor. This could significantly reduce incidences of overdose deaths, reduce public drug use, and properly provide care for those in need.

Disease prevention, crime reduction, and allocations of public funds are all benefits of these sites, as detailed in studies published by The Lancet and the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF).

Therefore, we ask our representing officials to consider our plea seriously. The restoration of a Safe Consumption Site in Windsor is not only an investment in public health but also an investment in the dignity and future of our fellow citizens. Please sign this petition today and support the restoration and funding of a Safe Consumption Site in Windsor.
