FROM COMMITMENT TO ACTION: Honour Our Children’s Rights

Dear supporters and decision makers,
Thank you for standing with our petition to regulate sexually explicit music played in public spaces where children are exposed.
We are renewing this call from a human rights perspective—centred on children’s dignity, well-being and development.
On 13 March 1991, Dominica ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. We made a commitment. Now we must give that commitment practical meaning.
The Convention provides a foundation for action:
• Article 3 makes children’s best interests a primary consideration in decisions concerning them.
• Article 17(e) calls for appropriate guidelines to protect children from information and material harmful to their well-being.
• Article 4 requires governments to take measures to implement these rights.
A child’s environment includes what they see and hear. Music played at public events, on public transport and throughout our communities deserves consideration when children are exposed.
Our girls deserve messages that affirm their worth. Our boys deserve messages of respect, consent and care. Every child deserves dignity and the opportunity to thrive.
The Convention does not itself ban explicit music. Our petition calls for clear, proportionate standards that protect children while respecting freedom of expression.
We ask decision makers to review existing laws, consult communities and child-protection professionals—including young people—and publish a clear timetable for action.
Parents, politicians across party lines, educators, religious and community leaders, NGOs, artists, DJs, promoters and transport operators: protecting children belongs to all of us.
