Chrissie writes:

"Since its hay-day as a training and competition venue for people of all ages the 52 year old athletics track in Whitchurch in South Bristol has fallen into disrepair. Despite its deterioration as a running track it's provided a great, safe location for other sports and recreation, including cycling. Like so many families, our daughter used to ride her balance bike on the track - as did groups of adults and children with disabilities as part of the Bristol Cycle Centre project.

It has been a vital community asset and a proven tool for youth diversion.

The City Council are planning to bulldoze this facility as part of the massive Hengrove Park development of 1400 homes. Doing so would remove a hugely valuable community asset that promotes physical activity, play, recreation, education, and social inclusion - at significant social cost.

At a time when the government has stated its commitment to support grassroots sport and conserve and build facilities that support people to be active, I am getting behind efforts calling for the protection and regeneration of the Whitchurch track - not just for this and future generations of track and field athletes, but for the whole community."

If you haven't already please submit statements and questions supporting the petition to Bristol City Council Democratic Services by tomorrow 2nd July:
