🎉 MAJOR WIN FOR CHILD ONLINE SAFETY 🎉

We have powerful progress to celebrate.

Indiana lawmakers have taken decisive action to address the growing crisis of social media’s impact on children and teens.

✅ Senate Bill 199 (SB 199) passed the Senate unanimously.
✅ The House advanced the bill with only one “no” vote.

This overwhelming bipartisan support sends a clear message: protecting kids online is a priority.

Why this is such an important victory

For years, families have raised alarms about:

The youth mental health epidemic linked to social media use
Platforms engineering addictive experiences for minors
The very real risk of children being exposed to predators online
Lawmakers have now formally recognized these risks — and SB 199 takes meaningful action.

What SB 199 will require

Under SB 199, platforms serving minors will face stronger obligations, including:

🔒 Limits on data collection from minors
Platforms will be restricted from broadly collecting and exploiting children’s personal data.

🧠 Restrictions on addictive algorithm practices
The bill targets design features that intentionally drive excessive engagement among young users.

🛡️ Stronger safeguards for minor accounts
Platforms must implement protections aimed at reducing harmful contact and predatory exposure.

👨‍👩‍👧 Greater transparency and accountability
Families will have clearer expectations for how platforms must treat and protect young users.

What this means for everyday users

If fully implemented, families should see:

Fewer manipulative engagement tactics aimed at kids
Reduced data harvesting of minors
Safer default environments for youth accounts
Increased responsibility placed where it belongs — on the platforms
This is a meaningful step toward rebalancing the digital environment in favor of children and families.

👏 Thank you to every parent, advocate, and supporter who helped push this conversation forward. This is real progress — and a win worth recognizing.
