Dear fellow supporters,
As we continue to fight for a crucial aspect of work-life balance in India, I want to emphasize the urgency of reducing working hours in our country. The current scenario is alarming, with Indians working some of the longest hours in the world, averaging 50-60 hours per week! This not only affects their physical and mental well-being but also hampers their personal and family lives.
Despite the Indian Labour Act (1976) and the Factories Act (1947) mandating a maximum 48-hour workweek, which already is too much, these laws are often flouted, and employees are forced to work excessively long hours. It's time for our government to take concrete steps to address this issue.
Let's look at some inspiring examples from around the world:
- Germany, known for its efficiency and productivity, has a 35-40 hour workweek, with employees enjoying a minimum of 20 paid vacation days per year.
- France has a 35-hour workweek, with a mandatory 30-minute lunch break and a minimum of 5 weeks paid vacation.
- Denmark, consistently ranked as one of the happiest countries, has a 37-hour workweek, with a focus on work-life balance and employee well-being.
These countries have proven that shorter work hours don't compromise productivity; instead, they lead to increased efficiency, better work quality, and improved employee satisfaction.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we urge you to pay attention to this critical issue affecting the lives of millions of Indians. We request you to:
- Enforce the existing labour laws and regulations
- Reduce the maximum working hours per week
- Increase paid vacation days and mandatory breaks
- Encourage companies to adopt flexible work arrangements
Let's work together to create a healthier, more productive, and happier India!
