The Issue

My name is Yelyzaveta, and I am a youth activist and future politician. As the co-founder and lead writer of Limnero NoGender, I have dedicated my work to issues surrounding Sustainable Development Goals 4, 5, 16, and 17. One of my most significant projects, 'Women Breaking Stereotypes,' highlights the stories of remarkable women from Europe, Asia, and North America. Throughout my journey, I have seen firsthand how gender bias in machine translation not only distorts communication but also reinforces deeper forms of social inequality.

Machine translation often defaults to masculine forms when the gender of the subject is ambiguous, especially when translating from English into gendered languages. This default approach not only misrepresents the original message but perpetuates gender stereotypes. For instance, translating the English sentence "The doctor was good" into German typically results in "Der Arzt war gut," automatically assuming a male doctor. However, it could also mean "Die Ärztin war gut," referring to a female doctor.

This is not just a matter of linguistics; it's an issue of fairness and representation. Machine translations that default to the masculine when gender is not specified contribute to the invisibility of women and reinforce outdated stereotypes. In an increasingly globalized world, where technology plays a crucial role in communication, it's imperative to ensure fairness in translation.

I propose an actionable solution: that tools like Google Translate offer alternative gendered translations whenever the gender is ambiguous. Instead of defaulting automatically to the masculine form, machine translators can provide users with options to view translations in either gender.

By implementing this simple yet effective change, we can promote gender equity in digital communication and reflect more accurately the diversity of our society. It's time to break away from ingrained biases and build a more inclusive and fair technological landscape.

Join me in urging Google to modify their translation algorithms by adding an option for alternative gendered translations. Sign this petition and be a part of a movement striving for equality and representation in language, helping to create a future where technology reflects the values of fairness and inclusivity that we all deserve.
