Hello, advocates! Thank you for supporting this petition. We are excited to share that there’s been exciting movement on the bill in the past few weeks.
In July, Food Systems Collaborative (that’s us!) partnered with the Congressional Hunger Center, Shipt, Farmlink Project, Food Recovery Network, and other non-profit partners to host a Gen Z Food & Hunger Summit. Over two inspiring days, 50+ passionate students from across the nation learned about the importance of federal policy and advocacy within the food system. These students then met with 35+ Congressional offices where they highlighted two key pieces of legislation, one of which was the Food Date Labeling Act (FDLA)!
Thanks to the advocacy efforts of summit participants, we are proud to announce that Representative Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA), Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-At Large), Representative Lori Trahan (D-MA), and Representative Eric Sorenson (D-IL) signed on to co-sponsor the Food Date Labeling Act.
What that means: Co-sponsorship = momentum! The more cosponsors a bill has, the more likely it is to enter the floor of the House or Senate for a vote, and therefore more likely that it will be passed by that chamber (and hopefully turned into law). In other words, gaining four co-sponsors for FDLA is a crucial step forward in eliminating confusing date labels and reducing food waste!
Where you come in: We need your help in spreading the word on this important legislation. Let’s show Congress that their constituents care about this bill, so they sign on as cosponsors, bringing the bill one step closer to passing!
