North Stradbroke Island Water Reserves Need Saving

We the people of Redlands including (Cleveland and North Stradbroke Island), who reside in the jurisdiction of Redlands City Council call on our Local Council and State Government to consider the following:

·         That in the lead up to Bushfire season in 2019/2020 increased water management and assessments takes place regarding water reserves at 18 Miles Swamp and other catchments. That consideration be made into ensuring the proper means is reached to investigate why the swamp and other reserves are drying up. Due to increased harsh weather conditions locally and nationally this has raised concern among locals including on the harm it could do to the local townships (especially in fire season), wildlife and swamp, which is not only protected wetlands but a historical heritage site, with folklore of shipwreck(s) being buried in it.

·         That Redlands Water and Redlands City Council consider (which has a responsibility not just SEQ Water and State) strategies to better maintain water considering reduced levels of water remaining on the island. Tingalpa Reservoir also feeds into the Redlands grid and all water from Redlands is being sent into Logan and potentially the Gold Coast and Brisbane as well. We ask that ways are found to mitigate this.

·         That Council and the relevant services assess the potential risks associated with less water made available to local townships on North Stradbroke Island and mainland Redlands and the potential safety and health risks that can come with it. Furthermore assess the risks of bushfires spreading from North Stradbroke Island to the nearby South Bay Islands.

Additionally to this we ask:

- How transparent is the water managerment protocol?

- Issue with the removal of the gates from the Leslie Harrison dam. Is there any intention of restoring the original capacity?

- What is the managment process? How does it operate? Who has the final say in how much water can be taken from Straddie? Redlands Water or SEQ Water? Or Both?

This petition will be submitted to both State Parliament and the Local Council (RCC).
