Reconsider Plants as Non-Living Entities

The Issue

As science progresses, so does our understanding of the nature of life. We, the undersigned, urge the scientific and academic communities to reconsider the classification of plants as living organisms. While it may seem radical, recent advances in technology and biology challenge the long-standing assumptions about what defines life.

Our Argument:
For centuries, the defining characteristics of life have revolved around certain observable traits, such as growth and reproduction. Plants have traditionally fit within these criteria. However, we believe that these attributes alone do not constitute sufficient evidence to classify an entity as "living." Here's why:

Reproduction and Growth Are Insufficient Markers: Reproduction and growth, often touted as defining traits of life, are exhibited by self-replicating machines and computer programs, which are undeniably non-living. For example, modern artificial systems can replicate themselves, adapt to their environments, and even evolve over time. Some computer programs grow in complexity as they run, mimicking biological growth. Yet, we do not consider these systems to be alive. Why then, should plants be considered differently when these markers can exist in both living and non-living entities?
Plants Lack Sense Perception: One of the most crucial features of life is the ability to perceive and respond to the environment through senses. Animals, for example, have developed complex sensory systems that allow them to see, hear, smell, taste, and touch, enabling them to interact meaningfully with their surroundings. Plants, on the other hand, lack true sense perception. Their responses to stimuli, such as light and gravity, are passive and mechanical, akin to a chemical process rather than an active perception. Without sense perception, the argument for plants being truly "alive" weakens considerably.
Plants Do Not Demonstrate True Autonomy: Living organisms typically exhibit autonomy in their interactions with their environment. Animals, for example, make decisions based on their perceptions, often learning from their experiences. Plants, on the other hand, follow preprogrammed responses to external stimuli, akin to a mechanical or biochemical process rather than an autonomous, living action. Their responses are passive and automatic, more akin to chemical reactions than the dynamic processes we observe in truly living beings.
Plants Are Complex Chemical Systems: While plants perform complex biological processes, these can be understood as intricate biochemical systems that don't necessarily indicate life. Many chemical reactions and processes are just as complex and occur without any notion of life being attributed to them. Just as we do not consider a chemical process like crystallization alive, despite its intricate growth patterns, we should reconsider labeling plants as living merely because of their biochemical complexity.
Redefining Life for a New Era: With our growing understanding of artificial intelligence, robotics, and synthetic biology, we are on the verge of a profound transformation in our understanding of life itself. We believe it's time to move beyond traditional markers and re-examine the criteria for life. Defining life based solely on physical processes such as growth and reproduction is outdated. Instead, we need to incorporate elements like sense perception, autonomy, and interaction with the environment in a more dynamic sense.
Conclusion:
The world is changing, and so must our definitions. We call for a re-evaluation of the criteria that classifies plants as living organisms. While plants are essential to life on Earth, fulfilling vital ecological roles, it does not necessarily mean they themselves are "alive" in the same way animals or conscious beings are.

By signing this petition, we support a nuanced reclassification that respects the complexity of plants while recognizing the limits of traditional biological definitions of life.
