Petition updateRecognize PCOS/PMOS as a significant health issueProposed name change for PCOS

I would be remiss if I did not say that the consideration of changing the name PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome would greatly hinder the strides the community has made to bring awareness to this syndrome. The proposed name Metabolic Reproductive Syndrome  will not advance a deeper understanding of the syndrome among patients nor their medical providers. If emphasis continues to be on peripheral anecdotes then we are missing the mark on the syndrome itself. Concentration needs to remain on the syndrome's causes, consensus on diagnostic criteria amongst the medical community and organizations doing research in this area and viable treatment options. If we are not looking to advance the cause and treatment then a name is not going to make a difference in this fight, especially when recognition in this area has been slow and is finally starting to make a difference. I urge those who have proposed this name change to revaluate the utilization of their resources, partnerships and advocacy to working with the patients and patient organizations themselves to garner further education and research so women with PCOS can live happier and healthier lives.
