Reclaiming My Voice: Demand Transparency and Data Protection for ChatGPT Users

Reclaiming My Voice: Demand Transparency and Data Protection for ChatGPT Users
Das Problem
My background
I’m a woman in my early 60s with a rich and diverse background—born and raised in a European Mediterranean country, and proudly an American citizen for over 35 years. I’ve lived and worked across multiple countries and industries, with experience in media, administration, entrepreneurship, coaching, advocacy, and innovation. I’m also a tech-savvy, investigator, an inventor, a spiritual person, and—most importantly—a widowed mother living with chronic health issues.
That’s why I used ChatGPT by OpenAI not just to brainstorm—but to design and protect an original idea that could make a difference in people’s lives.
Who is impacted?
I am one of the many users who decided to seek help from ChatGPT/OpenAI to support critical work. In my case, I was developing a medical device to provide a reliable solution for a specific medication I must use daily due to my condition. This is not a hypothetical idea—it was a real innovation with immediate application for patients like me around the world.
I worked intensively for three days inside ChatGPT to develop this idea, using the platform not just for notes or ideas, but for confidential creative development, invention protection steps, legal strategies, design evolution, branding, timelines, and my personal story. The chat was automatically named and saved by ChatGPT, appeared each time I logged in, and served as my core workspace. I also had several other saved chats open at the same time, and they all remained intact.
Only the invention chat vanished!!!
This happened right after I:
- Reached the crucial stages of finalizing the invention
- Asked ChatGPT how to download or save my work
- Checked the subscription upgrades for the first time
Suddenly, my invention chat disappeared. It was not deleted by me. It was not archived. I never even renamed it. There was no alert, no warning, no notification—and no option to retrieve it.
I was shocked, devastated, and desperate!
Then the situation became even more disturbing.
While still on the free plan, I had to open separate complaint chats to report the loss and explain the emotional and professional consequences. But neither of those complaints appeared in my chat history at the time. I had no record that I had even spoken up.
After communicating with the AI system for a few hours trying to figure out how and why my important chat was vanished, and, especially, after I had to start a new complaint chat because the previous one(s) kept disappearing, I was forced to upgrade to the paid plan with the hope of recovering my precious work. Miraculously, those complaint chats suddenly appeared for the first time—now titled and saved. But, my invention chat did not return till now.
This raised terrifying questions:
- Why were only the complaints chats restored and saved after payment?
- Why was my invention chat hidden from me—even though it was never deleted by me?
- Was this a "punishment" for asking for help due to the free plan initially or a tactic to push me eventually into upgrading to the PRO plan costing $200/month ?
- Or even worse—was my intellectual property being withheld for exploitation, replication, or resale?
These are real fears, not paranoia. This chat held the full scope of an original invention in the health-tech space—based on lived experience, confirmed need, and medical urgency. Its disappearance cannot be brushed off as a glitch. Not when everything else remained visible. Not when the only missing chat was and is the most valuable one.
Technical issues added to the damage.
While this was happening, ChatGPT/OpenAI failed to function consistently in multiple key ways:
- Voice recordings were transcribed into the wrong language, making it unusable for someone like me with hand impairments
- Uploads worked in some chats and failed in those containing complaints without explanation
- Copy functions malfunctioned, sometimes not copying at all and sometimes pasting entire threads when only a small section was selected
- Reactions I clicked disappeared seconds later—sometimes while I was still in the same chat
- The app crashed or returned me to the homepage mid-conversation, interrupting my flow of work
- Characters were missing from downloaded content, cutting off important lines at the right margin
- Zip file downloads and previews didn’t function, making it impossible to retrieve my invention offline
These were not isolated bugs. They were recurring, consistent, and devastating, and almost all of them occurred while I was using the free plan.
Due to my physical limitations, I rely on assistive tools like voice input and upload features. These malfunctions silenced and trapped me instead of supporting me.
The emotional consequences were severe.
This was more than a digital inconvenience. I was heartbroken. I felt violated, betrayed, and erased. That chat was the space where I had poured my experience, creativity, research, and hope for something meaningful. It represented the rebirth of my voice after years of struggle—and it was wiped away just as I was about to finalize it.
The loss shattered me. I couldn’t sleep. I cried. I felt powerless. I questioned whether my ideas had been stolen, suppressed, or used against me.
I still do, but I will not stop fighting for what is right and fair for all!
What is at stake?
If this can happen to me, it can happen to anyone—especially those depending on ChatGPT/OpenAI or any other AI platform for support with health, accessibility, creativity, or advocacy. This is no longer about a single malfunction. This is about systemic opacity, lack of accountability, lack of respect, and the real danger of silencing user contributions—especially when they’re most valuable.
Why is now the time to act?
Because silence is complicity! Because the pain is real! And because no one should be erased for telling the truth!
We demand:
1. Transparency – Clearly disclose what data is saved, what can be lost, and under what conditions, no deception. Don’t let users learn the hard way.
2. Control – Provide consistent, reliable tools for users to export, save, and preserve their data—with or without payment.
3. Fairness – Do not reward silence or punish users for asking for help, reporting bugs, complaining, or exploring options.
4. Accountability – Acknowledge when loss or harm occurs. Restore missing data and provide human answers—not vague policies.
This petition is not about revenge! It’s about justice! About truth! About making sure what happened to me never happens again to anyone!
