Le problème

This petition calls for Wellington City Council to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists on the Miramar Bays road by reserving the seaward lane for walkers, cyclists and the like from Miramar Cutting to Scorching Bay. See the proposal here

Wellington residents are proud of their picturesque city, but when it comes to prioritising pedestrians and cyclists, we lag. Our beautiful city, with over 2000 roads, predominantly serves motorists first.

The Miramar Bays roads are already popular with walkers and cyclists. The closure of the road to cars for five months from Point Halswell to Scorching Bay to strengthen sea walls clearly shows motorists don't need to drive this road.

The success of Te Ara Tupua demonstrates the appetite for paths where pedestrians and cyclists can walk and bike safely. The Miramar Bays roads could be transformed into another safe haven for minimal financial cost.  Fishers, sightseers and the like would still have full access.

Cities around the world have embraced similar changes successfully. This proposal aligns with plans to establish Mātai Moana as a public reserve.

Let's take a stand for a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable city.
