Westfield Former Opencast Site redevelopment.

The Issue

Recent reports clearly demonstrate the need to work to minimise CO2 emmisions and the ensuing detrimental effects on global warming. It is key to implement policies designed to bring a level of control to the increase in temperature levels.  Given this absolute need we request that the Scottish Government looks again at planning permissions granted and requested for building more incinerators to burn waste across Scotland such as the Westfield development.  See Fife Planning 18/02342/ARC | Application for the approval of Matters Specified in Conditions - Condition 2 plus the discharge of Conditions 10 (Datum........

If Scotland is to hit its green targets for recycling, energy recovery facilities like the one proposed for Westfield must be built says Iain Cockburn, the chief financial officer of Brockwell Energy, the parent company behind the proposals at Westfield for a plant that will burn rubbish at the site. If Scotland is to achieve its targets set under its Zero Waste Plan to stop using landfill for household waste containing biodegradable material by January 2021, then new facilities such as the one proposed at Westfield are required to replace landfill.

In addition to replacing a poor solution (landfill) with another poor solution (incineration) which will contribute to the emissions contributing to global warming, these proposals take scant consideration of the impact of transporting waste across the country for incineration.   In the case of Westfield we have been advised that an increase of over 500 HGV movements and in excess of more than 4000 other vehicle movements per day will have a negligible effect in respect of emissions or road safety, despite going not only past dozens of habitations it runs along side Loch Leven through 2 nature reserves and an SSI.

All of the Community Councils are opposed to the Westfield development, it will impact our elderly and our young, it will damage our burgeoning but fragile tourism industry and it will make an already dangerous road more dangerous still.

Help us to encourage the Scottish Parliament to call in these planning submissions and look again at the impact such developments will have on global warming
