For years, Nigeria has worked to protect its people from the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine products. The National Tobacco Control Act, 2015 has played a vital role in reducing exposure to these products and protecting children and young people from nicotine addiction.
 

Today, that progress is at risk.

The proposed National Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill 2025 could weaken key protections that help shield Nigerians from tobacco and nicotine products. Public health organizations have raised concerns that the proposed amendments may reduce safeguards against tobacco promotion and increase the risk of exposure to tobacco and nicotine products, particularly among children and young people.

Young people are especially vulnerable. We are the generation most active online, most exposed to digital marketing, and the generation that will live with the long-term consequences of decisions made today.

This is not just a tobacco issue.

It is a youth issue.

It is a public health issue.

It is about protecting the future of Nigeria.

We, the undersigned, call on the National Assembly to immediately recall the National Tobacco Control (Amendment) Bill 2025 for a transparent, evidence-based review that prioritizes public health over commercial interests. We also call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withhold presidential assent should the bill be transmitted in its current form.

Nigeria deserves stronger public health protections, not weaker ones.

Children deserve to grow up free from nicotine addiction.

Young people deserve laws that protect them, not laws that could make it easier for harmful products to reach them.
