Petition updateRe-open our Aberdeen LibrariesPetitions awaiting hearing in Court of Session & Library Service Review

We would like to thank everyone who has been in touch with us over the last couple of months.

We have a number of library users who are being represented by solicitors at Grampian Community Law Centre and Govan Law Centre whose petitions have been given dates at the Court of Session during August and September.

While these legal proceedings take place, a protective order has been placed on the library properties so the council cannot sell these assets without giving us a minimum of 14 days notice.

Our next challenge is that a report has been passed on to the Aberdeen City Council's Communities, Housing and Public Protection committee for discussion on Thursday 6 July relating to a full review of Aberdeen City Library and Information services to take place over the summer.

We have concerns about the timing of this review, given that it is coming at the same time as an online budget consultation and the number of community organisations that will not be meeting over the summer to give adequate time to organise proper focus groups and feedback.

Once again, the review has general footfall data without any context as the main evidence for the need for it, and we fear that more libraries could face closure at a time when we need them most.

If you are a resident of Aberdeen, we urge you to engage with your community councils, your councillors and look out for this consultation appearing in local library branches.

You can also attend Thursday's committee meeting from 10 am at Town House, Queen Street, Aberdeen or view online.
