Dear Signers,

Thank you so much for supporting our wrestlers. Farmer unions and khap panchayats have issued an ultimatum to Delhi Police to arrest Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh by May 21, 2023; or else, they would launch a protest in support of the wrestlers.

In my previous update, I had shared how it’s a travesty of justice that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh hasn’t been arrested yet, despite being charged for offences that are ‘serious’ in nature and non-bailable. Legal experts say that in cases involving sexual assault of a minor, arrest of the accused is “the norm” due to the seriousness of the offence. Yet, Delhi Police have still not arrested Singh.

Even the matter of India’s topmost Olympians protesting against sexual harassment at their workplace, has quietly moved out of our news cycle due to the elections in Karnataka and other political happenings in the country. The wrestlers, in the prime of their playing years, are still camping at Jantar Mantar in a year that awaits the World Wrestling Championships and the Asian Games. It’s been 25 days since they resumed their sit-in protest; but the apathy of our administration is such that our world-beating Olympians are now thinking about trying to gather support from international wrestlers of other countries

The protesting wrestlers have even launched a new Twitter page to keep their supporters apprised of their activities on the ground at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Further, there is a phone number – 9053903100 – where people can give a missed call to show support for their movement.

Let’s show our support for the wrestlers’ protest by sharing this petition and tagging their new Twitter handle. You can click here to do the same. Also, keep sharing this petition across your social media handles and within your family circles to spread the message

This is a moment of reckoning for Indian sport. The gains of the previous decades, in enhancing female participation in sports would come undone, if our topmost Olympians’ allegations aren’t probed in a fair and impartial manner. If 20,000 citizens sign this petition, the authorities will realise that the chief accused should be removed from all positions of power and arrested immediately, since the offence they’ve allegedly committed is non-bailable and a serious offence.
