Hi all, I had an amazing experience at Parliament last week, telling MPs about our campaign and why it is so important they take action now to help keep children safe in school. Because of my petition, I was asked to give evidence to an inquiry on safety and inclusion of children with medical conditions in schools. I have to admit I was a bit nervous, but it seemed to go really well! When I was sharing what happened to my daughter Jenny, I felt MPs genuinely cared. Many of them, including my own MP, even promised to make sure their local schools had good quality medical conditions policies. Hearing first hand from other parents at the meeting (including some who have signed this petition) with sadly similar experiences was really moving. I’m now even more convinced this is a campaign we need to win soon; the lives of so many children and parents are being made miserable by poor care in school. It was good though to hear MPs react well to the changes we’re calling for. Our idea of getting Ofsted to check if good medical condition policies were in place, and asking the Department of Education to offer more support, was praised as a “blueprint for a solution” by the MP chairing the meeting. The MPs at the meeting are going to write to the Minister, so let’s hope we’ll see that solution soon. After all we aren’t asking for a change in the law, just that we make sure schools are following the current law and have everything in place to keep children with medical conditions safe. If you’re interested in reading a bit more about what happened, details of the meeting have just been published on the Diabetes All Party Parliamentary Group website.
