The Issue

For more than four years, mothers, sisters, and children have been getting killed just for being female in South Africa. I know this pain all too well, and sadly, it's a story many women across our country have. Our own government isn't doing enough to protect us, to the point where every day becomes a gamble for safety. We face fears simply going to work, school, or taking a walk in our neighborhoods.

The narrative pushed forward, that wearing "inviting" clothing somehow justifies this behavior, is a toxic distortion of what's right. How have we come to a point where my dress is seen as an invitation, while their gaze, their actions, go unquestioned? Women are not animals to be corralled; we have rights, and we deserve respect and safety in our daily lives.

Statistics from reputable organizations like Stats SA reveal a grim reality: on average, over 100 cases of gender-based violence are reported daily, and many more go unreported because women have lost faith in the system designed to protect them.

While our government remains passive, we, as a society, must demand immediate and effective change. We call for increased government funding towards GBV education and prevention programs, mandatory sensitivity training for law enforcement, and stricter laws for those who perpetrate these heinous acts. Moreover, we demand accountability from those in leadership positions to ensure that existing policies are effectively enforced.

It's time our leaders not only take notice but take action. The legacy of violence must give way to a culture of safety and respect for all genders.

Help us shift this narrative from fear to action. Sign this petition and stand with us as we demand an end to gender-based violence in South Africa. Together, let's make sure our voices are heard and provoke real, lasting change for generations to come.
