The Issue

In 2018, a routine mole mapping clinic visit at Cork University Hospital (CUH) likely saved my mother’s life. This vital clinic played a crucial role in early detection and prevention of skin cancer for many patients in our community, but now it is no longer available to them.

CUH’s mole mapping clinic was an essential resource for thousands, providing timely checks and often life-saving interventions. Despite its significance, patients like my mother were left in the dark about its closure following the retirement of its leading doctor. This abrupt decision has left many without crucial preventative care, prompting urgent concerns for patient safety and continuity of care.

According to the Irish Cancer Society, skin cancer diagnoses have been on the rise, almost doubling over the last decade. Early detection remains our most effective weapon against this trend. The sudden cessation of the CUH mole mapping clinic could lead to delayed diagnoses, potentially costing lives.

While we acknowledge the challenges in finding a replacement specialist, the lack of communication with patients is unacceptable. Patients deserve transparency and alternatives. Consequently, we are calling on CUH’s administration to:

1. Immediately communicate the closure to all patients impacted.
2. Set up an interim solution, such as partnerships with nearby clinics, to ensure continuity of care.
3. Prioritize the recruitment of a new specialist or team to resume and rejuvenate mole mapping services.

Our mothers, fathers, and loved ones who have benefitted from this clinic deserve more. Their safety and well-being cannot be overlooked in administrative transitions.

Please sign this petition and lend your voice to ensure that CUH reopens this vital service or provides an equivalent option. Stand with us to ensure our community has access to lifesaving dermatological care.
