MERIT INDEX NEED JUSTICE FOR ALL

RRB has released notification RRB JE CEN 03/2018 for the recruitment of Junior Engineer (JE), JE (IT), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA) dated 29.12.2018. This recruitment process is ongoing, Second stage CBT2 exam has been conducted from 27 August 2019 to 1 September 2019. On November 1, 2019 list of candidates selected for document verification had been published.

Junior engineer recruitment except for the civil department, all other departments’ candidates belonging to electrical engineering, electronics engineering, and mechanical engineering are equally eligible for all the posts. Each engineering discipline had a different exam syllabus for the common posts. Merit Index formula given in 14.3 of notification RRB JE CEN 03/2018 is used to equalize the difficulty level of the papers between different branches and to arrive at a common merit list for all papers. But the merit index formula used in the exam process has faults in it because it a particular branch candidate has benefited from this and it is not possible to understand the difficulty level of the paper by only using topper marks as a standalone parameter.

The merit index formula in 14.3 of notification RRB JE CEN 03/2018, uses the dynamic parameter - 0.1% topper marks and Candidate Score rest all the parameters used are static. A similar Merit index formula is used in the GATE exam to prepare a common merit list, but apart from 0.1% topper marks and Candidate score, it includes parameters such as average marks, the standard deviation of marks, which play an important role in arriving at the correct result.

The RRB has been conducting recruitment processes in fair and transparent. The use of this current Merit formula won’t make this recruitment process fair. I kindly request you to look into the matter as the futures of many candidates are at stake.
