Ashley Vickers started this petition to Radio Stations

‘Do they know it’s Christmas’ by Band Aid has been played every year on our radio stations, music channels, adverts, tv for years. So much so that people just sing the words and don’t think about what they are actually saying.  The lyrics involved are promoting a racist agenda, which seeks to keep down an entire continent. It is not okay to be promoting the narrative that:

1. Africa is a country not a continent.

Too often are 50+ independent countries banded together as one collective. When the truth is each and every country has its own culture, climate and landscape. “There won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas” - just isn’t true, people ski, how are they doing this without snow?

2. Africa is a barren and desolate wasteland full of poverty stricken helpless individuals.

False- There are some of the most beautiful and rich ecosystems on the planet within Africa. There are some of the most well established and longest running societies in the world within Africa. The biggest issues most African countries face is trying to fix and mend the damage done by European colonisers - so how about we start with reparations on a global scale rather than sending £2 a month the Oxfam?

3. White people are the saviours

False- We are the destroyers - we have spent 100s of years pillaging, stealing countries, and now refuse to accept any responsibility over.

”thank god its them instead of you” - seriously , how is this song even allowed air time?

”pray for the other ones” - pray for all of us, this othering of black people needs to stop and I think this song is part of the problem and needs to go.
