Persecution of Hazara people in Pakistan

The Issue

April 12, 2019 - Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN)At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured when a bomb claimed by a militant group ripped through a fruit market in the Pakistani city of Quetta on Friday.

The attack hit the city's Hazarganji district, which is home to a large community from the Hazara Shia Muslim minority.

We strongly condemn the barbaric killings by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a militant group known to target the Hazara community, who have claimed to have it carried out the bombing. We are shocked and saddened on the terrorist attack that targeted innocent people, including women and children. Terrorists have once again shown that they have no respect for humanitarian and Islamic values.

Hazaras are disproportionately targeted by sectarian violence as they are easily identifiable due to their distinctive physical appearance. Nearly half a million Hazaras have settled here since fleeing Afghanistan to escape violence in their homeland during the past four decades.

A report released by the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) last year stated that 509 members of Hazara community were killed and 627 injured in various incidents of terrorism in Quetta from January 2012 to Dec 2017.

The bombing and the terrorist activities carried out by the Taliban and its affiliates demonstrate that they are not the followers of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh); for they have time and time again shown, by their violent actions, that they have no respect for humanitarian and Islamic values.

Whether the terrorist strike in Parachinar, Quetta, or in Christchurch, or for that matter anywhere in the world it is an attack on humanity.

The suffering in Hazarganji must not be in vain and with no end. The ugly reality of sectarianism must be confronted directly and decisively.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those killed or injured.

We urge the Mr Imran Khan, the Prime Minister and the Government of Pakistan to act to resolve and remove the lawlessness and human rights violations that remain rampant in the region. We also urge the Government to look at the discriminatory laws and practices that impact the freedom of speech and religion especially for the minority and that the people in minority should not be harmed because of their beliefs.
