VICTORY - ‘racist’ Palm Island appeal just ditched by government
28 févr. 2017 — I’m over the moon - the QLD Attorney General just dropped the Palm Island appeal meaning the government will no longer defend cops who breached the Racial Discrimination Act!!
I’ve not long got off the phone from a government MP to tell me the incredible news - the announcement was made this morning in Parliament.
I just can’t believe it. A few months ago the QLD government was set on appealing the Federal court decision that found police to have acted with racism in 2004. An Aboriginal man had just died in custody, and the community protested before the police responded with awful violence.
We were shocked when the Attorney General appealed this decision, and that the government was gearing up to defend the ‘racism’ of QLD police. So I started my Change.org petition, you all added your signatures and took online actions to convince the government to drop the appeal.
And today, we won! This is huge justice for my Aboriginal community, and that of Palm Island.
I can’t thank you enough for your support. Here’s a video message of thanks from me, having a celebratory glass of champagne with my sister!
Thanks again,
Gracelyn Smallwood.
