A Call to Honour Captain Kevin “Sully” Sullivan: A True American Hero Deserving Recognition
January 2, 2025
Captain Kevin “Sully” Sullivan - an extraordinary aviator with a remarkable military and civil aviation career, remains an unsung hero despite his unparalleled contributions to global aviation safety. Best known for his decisive actions during the 2008 Qantas Flight 72 emergency, Captain Sullivan saved 315 lives, including survivor Fuzzy Maiava, who is now spearheading a heartfelt campaign backed by over 90,000 petitioners, to secure long-overdue recognition in his homeland.
Captain Sullivan’s story begins with his service in the United States Navy during the height of the Cold War. A decorated Top Gun pilot, he flew cutting-edge fighter jets and served on prominent aircraft carriers, including the USS Midway (CV-41) and the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). These vessels were at the forefront of U.S. naval operations, protecting freedom and projecting strength across the globe in prepared readiness. Captain Sullivan’s skill and dedication as a naval aviator set him apart, earning him the honour of becoming the first-ever Top Gun graduate selected for an international exchange program.
In this groundbreaking role, Captain Sullivan was sent to Australia to assist the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). As an exchange pilot, he flew the iconic Mirage III fighter jets and provided advanced tactical training to Australian pilots. His contributions not only strengthened U.S.- Australia military ties but also laid the groundwork for a lifelong bond with the nation he would later serve as a commercial pilot.
These experiences proved invaluable during the harrowing events of Qantas Flight 72. When the Airbus A330 suffered catastrophic mid-flight computer malfunctions, Captain Sullivan’s elite training and calm demeanour allowed him to masterfully guide the aircraft to an emergency landing in Exmouth, Western Australia, saving every soul on board with the assistance of First Officer Peter Lipsett, and Second Officer Ross Hales. His actions spurred vital reforms in aviation safety, compelling Airbus to redesign flawed software and systems, thereby protecting millions of passengers worldwide.
Yet, despite his heroism and global impact, Captain Sullivan remains unrecognised in Australia, where he spent much of his career. Efforts are now underway to ensure that America, his birthplace, acknowledges him as the national hero he is.
Fuzzy Maiava, a survivor of Qantas Flight 72 and tireless advocate for Captain Sullivan, passionately appeals to the American public:
“I am pleading with those who have the influence to make a difference - help us bring this incredible story to the attention of incoming “United States President Elect - Donald J. Trump,” said Maiava. “Captain Sullivan is a true American hero. His actions epitomise courage, selflessness, and the relentless pursuit of protecting others. He deserves to be acknowledged and celebrated for his extraordinary contributions to aviation and humanity.”
President Trump, known for his steadfast support of American heroes - whether military personnel, first responders, or civilians - has consistently championed the recognition of those whose bravery and sacrifices embody the spirit of the nation. Advocates believe Captain Sullivan’s story aligns perfectly with these values and are urging the President to honour him as a symbol of resilience and leadership.
