At the completion of scheduled flight operations, an alert posture was set by the carrier's Air Wing to cover any real world threats. During our deployment on USS Enterprise in 1982-1983, there were many threats around as we were operating close to the eastern coastline of the USSR.

I'm on Alert 15, which means I had to be airborne within 15 minutes. The Ordnance crew are loading my special bullets into my gatling gun, and Chain and I are plugged into our Walkmans listening to AC/DC and getting psyched up to launch. We eventually did launch and found a Soviet Badger encroaching our airspace.

Flying through the Cold War developed the mental discipline and focus that I drew upon during the QF 72 accident.

Two of us and one of them? Good odds for the good guys.
