It's that time of year, again. No, not Christmas or the holidays, but the day Ottawa orders all federal properties nationwide to fly the British flag to celebrate our independence...from Britain! 

Each December 11, the federal government marks the anniversary of the 1931 law that won Canada control of its own affairs. But it does so in the most colonial, subservient manner. It tells all federal buildings, ports, harbours, airports, post offices, and more, to fly the flag of the United Kingdom -- the country whose authority we overtook. It's bizarre to fly the flag of the former Motherland to celebrate emerging from its shadow, and only symbolizes still being tethered to it. 

This petition urges a change in that protocol: If this anniversary is to be marked at all, it should be done by flying the Canadian flag, and no other country's.
