Flag Day on February 15th marks the anniversary of the Canadian flag. It was 58 years ago that our beloved Maple Leaf was adopted.
So what can we possibly give our flag on its birthday? How about something it has never had: Precedence ahead of all other flags. That means giving the Maple Leaf the position of honour in all flag displays. It means never having to surrender our flag to another one, nor forcing it to take an inferior position.
Current federal rules actually say the opposite! They deem British royal and viceregal flags more important than Canada’s, compelling our flag to yield its position of honour, or be removed entirely. It’s time to revise that regulation. No personal flag should trump the Maple Leaf.
What a fine, patriotic, and logical birthday gift this would be: Proclaiming the Canadian flag takes first place at all times in its own country.
