For the first time in memory, the Canadian flag will fly from the Peace Tower on July 1st and not be removed. Typically, it is surrendered. Ottawa says the personal flags of British royals and their viceroys take precedence. But the coronavirus pandemic has seen ceremonies cancelled, so no governor general or royal will appear on Parliament Hill, this time. This exceptionally rare situation permits our national flag to enjoy precedence in the capital on our highest patriotic day. On any other First of July, the Maple Leaf would be taken down. That's wrong.
It shouldn't take a global pandemic to secure our national flag to the Peace Tower at all times, especially on the anniversary of Confederation. The rules need to change.
Thank you for signing this petition to have Ottawa update our antiquated flag protocols. Share it in your social networks to urge action. And have a flag-filled, patriotic Canada Day!
