As the nation celebrated its 152nd anniversary, yesterday, officials in Ottawa ordered the Canadian flag removed from the top of the Peace Tower, replacing it with the blue flag of the Governor General. At the symbolic heart of our democracy, on our highest national holiday, the Canadian flag was surrendered. That is the current protocol.
Well, that needs to change. The governor general's flag can surely fly and signify her presence, but it should *never* come in place of, or before the national flag--certainly not on the First of July on Parliament Hill.
This is an auspicious time to change our antiquated flag rules. We're still basking in the afterglow of that true patriot love that shows itself most conspicuously every July 1st. And decision-makers are listening, as an election approaches.
