How to mark the birth of Canada's sovereign? Fly a British flag, says Ottawa

Victoria Day is the official birthday of the current reigning sovereign of Canada. And while that person has always lived in Britain, the office of "queen [or king] of Canada" is completely separate from their British crown. So it's perplexing that the Department of Canadian Heritage orders all federal buildings to fly the British flag to mark the birth of Canada's sovereign. Cities and provinces that take their lead from Ottawa follow along, too. The same person reigns over a total of 16 countries, including Jamaica, Barbados, and New Zealand. We don't fly the flags of those countries on Victoria Day. It just wouldn't make sense. The same logic applies to the flag of the United Kingdom. In Britain, they mark their sovereign's birth in June, and they certainly don't fly Canadian flags to do it. Our flag rule confuses two distinct crowns, and has us flying the flag of a foreign realm on OUR holiday. If any flag should be flown on Victoria Day, it's Canada's, alone. The rule needs to change to reflect the day's intent of honoring Canada's sovereign, not Britain's. And there's no better time in which to do that than this sesquicentennial year.
