I have just sent the following letter to Nottingham Forest and the National Football Museum. Fingers crossed!! Thanks again for all of your support.
Dear Dr Kevin Moore and Mr Fawaz Mubarak Al Hasawi
Throughout the last week 1473 fans of football have signed the petition 'Put Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest double European champions in football's hall of fame' on the Change.org website. I began this petition after reading an article in 'The Observer' about the new movie 'I Believe in Miracles' which is about the team's rise from thirteenth in Division Two to become First Division champions and then double European champions in 78/79 and 79/80.
I, and many of the people who signed the petition, believe that the team's achievements under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor rival any of the greatest stories in football, including the teams currently in the National Football Museum's hall of fame. At a time when football is increasingly about money, not to mention the current FIFA scandal, I believe the sport in Britain would be well served by this 'Roy of the Rovers' fairytale being nationally recognised in the Hall of Fame. Future generations will be inspired by this lowly Midlands club, led by a genius, who took on the might of Europe and triumphed on some of the greatest nights of football this country, or any country, has ever seen.
Although I was too young to understand what was happening to football in Nottingham in the late 1970s and early 1980s, my father and grandfather (a Forest season ticket holder for over seventy five years) attended both European Cup finals and hearing their stories in the years following have always made me proud of my club's achievements. I am writing to both Nottingham Forest and the National Football Museum in the hope that both parties can make contact and decide a way for this induction to happen. Early in the petition process the museum contacted me to say that if the club were willing to work with them, then they would be happy to look for a way forward.
I urge the authorities at Nottingham Forest to consider the importance of this period in the club's history, both to the people of Nottingham and the club itself. I am sure you recognise your responsibility as guardians of this legacy. Please read the comments on the petition, which I have attached, as they give a very clear insight into the feelings of people, mainly from Nottingham, but also from all over the world. Their passion for the great history of Nottingham Forest and their wish to see it recognised is undeniable.
It is Nottingham Forest's 15Oth anniversary this year and it is 35 years since the second European triumph. I hope you agree that now is the perfect time to induct Brian Clough's double European champions into the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame. Please make this happen.
Yours sincerely,
Tim Ashworth
