Richard Glossip's wrongful conviction (1998, retrial 2004) was based primarily on the testimony of Justin Sneed, who confessed to the murder of motel owner Barry Van Treese in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. During the trial, prosecutors withheld motel financial records, Sneed's bipolar diagnosis, and psychiatric notes revealing he had been prescribed lithium, prompting the United States Supreme Court to overturn the conviction and order a new trial in February 2025, ruling that the prosecution had violated its constitutional duty to correct false testimony.
While Richard spent over three decades on death row, his daughter Ericka missed those formative years, birthdays, graduations, and quiet dinners. The rupture goes beyond imprisonment; it inflicts damage on families and futures.
Oklahoma’s HB 2235 (effective July 1, 2025) removes the $175K cap and provides $50K per year incarcerated (+$25K per year on death row or parole), plus tuition waivers. But this still leaves glaring gaps: no healthcare, no housing, no mental health support, and no family reintegration aid.
A federal compensation framework would ensure justice for individuals like Richard and their families, regardless of their location. Please sign and share to help us push Congress and the DOJ toward a national solution.
