Punahou's Class of 2018 has endured many changes at Punahou. Some changes were big. Others, small. None, however, were more unexpected than a change to Punahou’s policy of graduates’ @punahou.edu email accounts. For as long as email addresses have existed at Punahou, graduates have been given the gift of the ability to use their @punahou.edu email accounts forever. However, in an announcement in assembly, Punahou stated that they will de-activate all email@example.com email accounts for the Class of 2018 in September. All members of the Class of 2018, including the advisors and deans, were blindsided by this announcement.
The original policy was fairly unique and alumni took pride in their @punahou.edu accounts. Many still use them today. As graduates embark on new journeys in life, an @punahou.edu gives graduates an opportunity to retain part of their identity. Punahou’s brand and alumni network are a major part of the gift of a Punahou education. An @punahou.edu account gives graduates an opportunity to stay connected to their cherished roots, rather than become just another user of gmail.com or aol.com.
Many students’ @punahou.edu accounts are linked to vital companies, such as Naviance Family Connection, College Board, and other educational websites. If we were given fair warning, students would not have linked many accounts from third-party services to their @punahou.edu accounts. However, it was fair for many of us to assume that Punahou would continue its tradition, or at-least give students advanced notice of their policy change.
As seniors in our penultimate week as Punahou students, we feel that we should be looking forward to the traditions that dozens of classes have crafted and refined. We should not have to fight to restore a tradition that has been abruptly and bafflingly taken away from us.
We ask that Punahou re-evaluate this new policy and restore a tradition cherished by many graduates.
