Keep and expand the use of Native American names, imagery, references, logos and other positive symbols in sports team names, roads, cities and other venues.

The Issue

Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) has started this petition to tell the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Braves, Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Indians and Chicago Blackhawks—as well as all colleges, high schools and other groups that carry nicknames, logos and other positive references to Native Americans—to keep them. We, in representation of the overwhelming majority of Native Americans who enjoy the Native presence in the American mainstream, ask those organizations, who have changed them to appease a small group of Native Americans—under the influence of racist, non-Native forces, to change them back.

We have noticed that large amounts of the national, local and regional dialogue on Native symbols and imagery in the U.S. mainstream is misguided, mischaracterized and patently false, as 90 percent or more of all Native Americans, as well as most of all Americans enjoy our tributes to the Native heritage of the entire Western hemisphere, and in a Nation where other cultures—such as Fighting Irish, Vaqueros, Cowboys, Patriots, ‘49ers and more—are so represented without question or protest.

We ask the general public, municipalities and other social and governmental bodies to not only preserve these symbols, but to expand their uses, far and wide, naming more teams, streets, roads, throughways, parks and towns in honor of Native Americans because as Americans, WE ALL walk on once-Native land.

Native American Guardians Association (NAGA), is a grassroots alliance of Native and non-Native Americans who have united to preserve positive, honorable symbols and imagery of, as well as tributes to, Native American culture in the American Mainstream, and to recognize those Native and non-Native citizens, who work tirelessly to the same end.
