Disability Awareness Month 2026: Renewed Call for a Public Apology from 104.1 KRBE, Roula & Cumulus

DISABILITY IS NOT A PUNCHLINE!
OCTOBER — NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH
October is a time to recognize the contributions, dignity, and rights of people with disabilities. But awareness means very little if we remain silent when someone is ridiculed because of a medical condition.
On January 30, 2026, a bakery employee living with arthritis became the subject of ridicule during a segment on Houston’s 104.1 KRBE. Her handwriting and physical difficulties were discussed in a way that turned her struggles into entertainment.
Think about that.
A woman was simply trying to do her job and earn an honest living despite living with a painful medical condition.
She deserved respect, not ridicule.
Following complaints, Cumulus Media acknowledged that the content was inconsistent with company policy, and the material was removed.
But removing the content does not erase what happened.
This Disability Employment Awareness Month, I am renewing my call for 104.1 KRBE, Roula, and Cumulus Media to issue a public on-air apology.
Not a private response. Not simply removing the material.
A public acknowledgment of what happened, an apology for the ridicule, and a commitment to ensuring people with disabilities are treated with dignity and respect.
Arthritis is not a joke. Physical limitations are not a joke. And nobody should have to fear becoming the subject of public humiliation simply because they are trying to work while living with a disability.
Our Change.org petition has reached 495 supporters — just five signatures away from 500!
To everyone who has signed, thank you for standing up for dignity and respect.
This is not about revenge or attacking anyone. It is about accountability, compassion, and making sure we learn something from what happened.
Disability awareness is not just about recognizing disabilities. It’s about recognizing the humanity of the people living with them.
You never know what battles someone is fighting behind closed doors.
And remember: the person being laughed at today could be your mother, your father, your child, your friend, or even you tomorrow.
A disability does not diminish a person’s worth.
Let’s make this month mean something.
Please sign and share the petition.
495 voices and counting. Let’s reach 500 and keep calling for accountability.
