The helmeted hornbill is very close to extinction. They are being hunted for their bill, which is similar to ivory. Once common, they are now very hard to find. Protecting the kluet region is more critical than ever now. Hornbills need old trees to nest in and there's very little pristine forest left in sumatra. Leuser is also better protected than many other parts of sumatra, which means the birds are less likely to be killed. There may be hope for these birds yet.
