I’m sharing the template of the email I sent to hundreds of MPs in order to secure sponsorship.Again, MP Todd Doherty (Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Suicidal Prevention) and his team are sponsoring. It’s a long and tedious task to get a law past in Canada but WE can do it and we’re on our way!
So many times with Madi’s Law I have wanted to give up. The thought of my daughter and all the Madi’s out there will not allow me to do that. Every supporter has given me strength. I am so appreciative of all who have signed this petition. It means so much to me!

My name is Louise Carter. I was inspired to start a petition after the death of my daughter on April 13th, 2021, in Kitchener, Ontario. She was 27 years old and died a paradoxical suicide when the drugs the doctors gave to help her caused the suicidal ideation that led to her death by suicide.
This petition was tabled in the House of Commons on November 3rd, 2023. It is petition number 441-01652. It’s better known as Madi’s Law. It’s for a mandatory psychotropic drugs safety waiver. This would mean that a caregiver would have to be notified when a patient was put on a psychotropic drug for the first time. This caregiver would watch over the patient until it was deemed safe to take the drug.
Most patients try three of four different antidepressants/psychotropic drugs before they find the one that works for them or decide it’s not for them at all. Many suffer adverse reactions while trying to find the correct one. These adverse reactions can be suicidal ideation, homicide in addition to violent behaviour. Madi’s Law is asking for safer practices. Many do not understand that a pill can be just as dangerous as a loaded gun.

I need a member of parliament to create a bill. Search your heart and ask if this is you? Madi’s Law is a commonsense idea that can save a lot of lives. This type of caregiver system already exists in Canada. Patients are not allowed to leave surgeries in addition to many other medical procedures without a caregiver in place.
If you’re able to assist, please let me know. I’ve worked really hard and would like to leave a legacy for my beautiful daughter, so she doesn’t die in vain.
Antidepressants and alcohol are strongly linked to suicide. Drug induced psychosis is very real. You could be paying it forward to prevent the death of someone you love. Thank you for your time,
