Prutehi Litekyan notes parallels to Mauna Kea, holds demonstration in support

Prutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian invites the community to join in a solidarity demonstration in support of the protectors in Hawai’i locking arms in a peaceful protest to defend their sacred -āina, Mauna Kea.

From the Mariånas to Mauna Kea, and in many other communities, indigenous people continue to rise up to defend what is SACRED: our water, land, ancestral sites, and historic and cultural resources. These are our inalienable rights as indigenous people. We are connected through the love for our land and culture, and through continued colonization, oppression and environmental racism inflicted upon our people.

“There are numerous parallels between our struggles here in the Mariånas and what is happening in Hawai’i. In the same way it is not about a telescope in their fight, it is not about being anti- or pro- military for ours,” said Maria Hernandez of Prutehi Liteykan. “It is about our rights as CHamoru people and theirs as Kanaka Maoli to stop desecration on sacred lands that are designated as conservation zones; where construction has the potential to impact our aquifers; where our culture and quality of life will be forever impacted by projects that are not in the best interests of our people.”

Funds can be donated to the Aloha ‘Āina Support Fund at bit.ly/maunafund to support non-violent direct action taken to protect Mauna Kea from further industrial development.

The wave will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at ITC Intersection on Monday, July 22.

Prutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian, a direct action group dedicated to the protection of natural and cultural resources in all sites identified for DOD live-fire training on Guam, opposes the establishment of any military firing range, stands in solidarity with Guardians of Gani’, PaganWatch, Tinian Women’s Association, and Alternative Zero Coalition by preventing environmental degradation and destruction on sacred and native lands, and promotes the continued pursuit for return of ancestral lands.
