Prutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian, Independent Guåhan, and the Guåhan Coalition for Peace and Justice are collaborating to host a Report Back session on Wednesday, February 7, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSS) Room 106. The group will provide an overview of the solidarity work they participated in and the community strategies they learned.
Representatives of the three organizations attended a solidarity exchange in Okinawa and Tokyo from January 19 through 28, 2018. The reps who were hosted by One Love Takae and the No Helipad Takae Resident Society gained a deeper understanding of the environmental and social challenges experienced in Okinawa from the ongoing occupation and expansion of U.S. military facilities. The organizers and participants all discussed similar community responses, including local efforts to protect limestone forest habitat at Litekyan and the Northern Lens Aquifer and shared efforts to protect the community of Takae and the Yanbaru forest in Okinawa.
Separately, one of the group members is heading to Vieques, Puerto Rico and is taking donations of seeds, solar powered lawn lights, and camping tents for projects to help promote local food production and the return of bees after the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Attendees are welcome to bring flower and fruit seeds, solar powered outdoor lights, and camping tents to the Report Back this Wednesday.

Guåhan Coalition for Peace and Justice Mission Statement: Our focus on peace and justice is central in light of the ongoing issue of Guåhan as an unincorporated territory or modern-day colony of the United States. Particular emphasis is made on keeping Guåhan, our island home, safe and sustainable for our children and generations to come. Traditional CHamoru society was matrilineal in structure. Hence, as matriarchs in our community, we feel a personal sense of commitment to ensuring the survival of our people in the midst of colonization.
