Petition updatePrutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian and Oppose Degradation and Militarization of Native LandsResolution 228-24 Passes to Pause the Construction of the Live-Fire Training Range!

Save Ritidian

26 Sept 2017
We are extremely grateful to Senators Telena Nelson, Speaker BJ Cruz, Vice-speaker Therese Terlaje, Fernando Esteves, Wil Castro, Tommy Morrison, Dennis Rodriguez, San Agustin, Louise Borja Muna, Frank Aguon Jr., and James Espaldon for working to prevent irreversable harm to our culture and environment through their passage of Resolution 228-34. We are deeply disappointed in Senators Tom Ada, Mike San Nicolas, and Mary Camacho Torres who chose not to stand with the community in protecting these areas from irrevocable damage by the placing of live fire training ranges on conservation areas where our island’s endangered flora and fauna are. We appeal to them to change their position and work to safeguard our heritage for the sake of future generations to come. We also look forward to Senator Regine Biscoe Lee making clear her position inasmuch as she was not present to vote on the resolution. We hope that Governor Calvo and Congresswoman Bordallo will heed the calls upon them in the resolution for action to seek a pause to destructive pre-construction and construction activities.
A lawsuit by NMI groups and Earthjustice is still pending determination as to whether the Department of Defense Records of Decisions are based on faulty analysis and need to be reinitiated in whole or in part. It is irresponsible to inflict permanent damage to those sacred places, special medicinal and other native plants, and unique species that exist in Tailålo’ (Northwest Field) and Litekyan (Ritidian) that define the CHamoru culture and our island environment while that court case is pending. Also, it must continue to be made clear that the Marines are scheduled to arrive no earlier than six to eight years from now so there is absolutely no need to rush to cause irrevocable cultural and environmental damage.
