Provide free sanitary napkins in Lourdes College restrooms
The Issue
In a school where young women are encouraged to reach their full potential, basic necessities should never be a barrier. I am a student at Lourdes College, and like many others, I have found myself unprepared during the day without access to affordable sanitary products. Menstruation is a natural part of life, and yet it often feels like a hidden burden. No one should have to choose between attending class and dealing with their period comfort.
The reality is, menstrual products are not a luxury but a necessity. Research shows that an average woman spends thousands on menstrual products throughout her lifetime. For many students, including those from low-income families, this cost can be a significant burden. According to a National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) study, one in five girls has missed school due to a lack of access to sanitary products, a statistic that's both shocking and heartbreaking.
Lourdes College has a proud tradition of supporting its students, and offering free sanitary napkins in female restrooms is a small but impactful change that aligns with our values of inclusivity and support. Many educational institutions worldwide have adopted this practice, recognizing that it helps students focus better, thereby improving their academic performance and wellbeing.
By implementing free sanitary napkins in these restrooms, Lourdes College can ensure that all female students have one less barrier to their education. This initiative would not only demonstrate the college's commitment to gender equality and accessibility but also foster an environment where students feel cared for and supported.
We urge the administration of Lourdes College to prioritize the health and comfort of its students by ensuring that free sanitary napkins are readily available in all female restrooms. This change will pave the way for a more supportive and equitable educational environment. Please join me in supporting this vital cause by signing this petition. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many students.
