Provide better mental health support for students
The Issue
As you navigate the halls of our school, you may not immediately see the silent struggles many students face. These walls have witnessed countless stories of young individuals battling anxiety, depression, and various other mental health challenges, often without the support they desperately need. It’s heartbreaking to watch friends and peers suffer silently, feeling isolated or unheard, and knowing they might feel that there's no one to turn to.
In the aftermath of the pandemic, the mental health crisis amongst students has intensified, with over 60% of young individuals reporting increased stress and mental health issues, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association. The National Institute of Mental Health highlights that early intervention is crucial in preventing severe outcomes and improving lifelong mental health. Yet, here at our school, resources are scarce, and students often lack access to professional counselling and support services.
Currently, our school has only one counselor per 300 students—certainly not enough for personalized attention or effective intervention. The wait times for counseling appointments can extend to weeks, a duration much too long for someone who might be in crisis. This inadequate support system is failing to meet the needs of our student body and does not reflect the importance that mental health should have.
We urge the school administration to allocate additional funding and resources towards hiring mental health professionals and implementing comprehensive mental health programs. Establishing a mental health awareness week, with workshops and seminars, could help reduce stigma and educate students about recognizing signs of distress and knowing when to seek help. Additionally, creating peer-support groups can provide an immediate, informal network of empathy and understanding.
By implementing these changes, not only would we be supporting those currently in need, but we would also be proactively creating a healthier and more supportive environment for all students, encouraging them to thrive both academically and personally.
Together, let's advocate for a change that makes our school a place where every student feels safe, understood, and supported. Sign this petition today to demand better mental health support in our school.
