Kavesar Lake - Preservation of natural habitat and wetland biodiversity
Kavesar lake & Shiva temple is more than a century old natural habitat which used to be visited by atleast 200 species of water and terrestrial birds, reptiles, mammals, wetland flora, butterflies, insects, etc
The current residents being unaware of its ecological and cultural significance (thane being city of lakes) have demanded TMC to construct walking track, lights, toilet, temple, etc at TMC Lake Garden. This will result into concretisation of the Kavesar lake premises.
Don’t understand why lights are needed when the lake premises is closed between 7pm - 6am. We absolutely don’t think about the lake biodiversity and view everything only from human perspective only. This unscientific and ecologically harmful demand should be withdrawn by the Federation of HE.
Earlier there used to be so many species of water birds and other biodiversity seen at Kavesar Lake (now TMC lake garden). But, due to the fountain and destruction of the riparian zone of the wetland, the natural biodiversity has greatly reduced.
We need to understand the value of catchment and riparian zone of a wetland and preserve its natural vegetation to continue cohabitation with local biodiversity.
Hope the residents can convince the HE Federation members to withdraw this demand in favour of ecological wisdom.
