The Issue

As a teenage girl living in Gauteng, the fear of simply stepping outside my home has become an overwhelming reality. Over the past two months, the areas surrounding Rhodesfield and the R21 in Kempton Park have become a haunting ground, where the lives of five women were brutally taken away. These women, stripped of their safety and dignity, were found half-naked in secluded bushes, their dreams and aspirations ending in cold silence. The most recent victim, Elizabeth, simply went for a run, hoping to enjoy her daily exercise and never returned home to her loved ones. This rising violence concerns not just me, but every girl and woman who wishes to live without fear.

We, the community of Kempton Park, demand swift and assertive action to ensure the security of our women and girls. Our call to you, leaders of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, and the Minister of Police, is to address this critical situation with the urgency it deserves.

Firstly, we advocate for the installation of streetlights and CCTV cameras in the Rhodesfield and R21 regions of Kempton Park, essential for deterring such heinous crimes in poorly-lit and isolated areas. These surveillance systems not only act as preventative measures but also provide crucial evidence in apprehending those responsible.

Secondly, we insist on round-the-clock police patrols until the perpetrator is apprehended. Let us create a visible police presence to help deter criminals and provide solace to the local populace who are currently living in fear. This approach, combined with community vigilance initiatives, can significantly reduce the crime rate, as seen in other areas where proactive policing has been implemented.

Finally, we call for the urgent creation of a specialised task force within SAPS, dedicated to investigating and resolving this series of murders. Time is of the essence, and as long as there is no resolution, women’s lives remain at risk. It's critical to bring justice to those we have lost and peace to their grieving families.

Time is of the essence. We need immediate action to ascertain the safety of our community so that we can reclaim our streets and our right to live without fear. Sign this petition to urge our leaders to take decisive action and protect the lives of women in Kempton Park.
