Copperwood would be the closest sulfide mine to Lake Superior in history. With an ore grade of 1.5%, nearly 99% of all extracted material will be stored on site, forever, as heavy-metal laden waste on topography sloping towards Lake Superior. Copperwood additionally will be in extreme proximity to both Porcupine Mountains State Park and the North Country Trail and thus will subject a thriving outdoor recreation area to sound, light, air, and water pollution, as well as non-stop industrial traffic and subterranean blasts. We see no good reason why this area of ecological and economic importance should be endangered for the sake of copper, a non-critical mineral, and the padding of the pockets of a few Canadian executives.
Although Copperwood has been dormant for many years, this summer Highland Copper has clearcut forest, destroyed wetlands, and rerouted streams. On July 24th they also received $30 million from a Canadian partner company, with the assurance of $30 million more. On August 4th the Department of Energy added copper to the "critical materials" list. The future of the project depends not just on the price of copper, but on the magnitude of the resistance movement against it.
Copperwood is advancing much faster than expected and we would be wise to take it seriously.
